<p>Yes, that&#8217;s me above!</p>
<p>When I look back at how I used to look, I just can&#8217;t believe it. I was so wrapped up in work and going out with my friends that I just didn&#8217;t pay any attention to my own health.</p>
<p>Well sadly I was forced to change all that when I had a routine check up with my doctor. He told me I had to lose weight or else I was at great risk of having a stroke or even a heart attack. I couldn&#8217;t believe it&#8230;&#8230;I was only 24 at the time.</p>
<p>So my mission began. I must admit, it wasn&#8217;t easy either. I tried low carb, low fat and almost every other diet on the market. Then my friend Jane told me about a diet she found on the internet called <a href="http://www.fatlossa-z.com">Fat Loss 4 Idiots</a>. So I figured it wouldn&#8217;t hurt and gave it a go. <br />Not so today.  In today&#8217;s restaurant climate you need systems and procedures in order to survive and stay in operation and be solvent in business.</p>
<p>       Years ago all you had to do when you opened your restaurant or cafeteria was to have your staff cook the meals.   The owner&rsquo;s job, for the most part, was to hire staff, open the door in morning, greet customers and collect the cash.  As long as you were polite to your customers and stayed open long hour&rsquo;s business was good.  At the end of the month, bills and wages were paid.  What was left over was profit for the owner or owners. It was all as simple as that.</p>
<p>         Not so today.   In today&rsquo;s business environment with all thee multitude of taxes, regulations and business license fees it gets much more complex.  Even before a business can open there are myriads of forms, regulations and licenses to either apply for or meet. On top of that figure in credit cards, banks, accounts payable schedules, payroll taxes, vacation plans, health care plans etc and the list is endless.   It&rsquo;s no wonder that the whole business is much more complex and &ldquo;systems &ldquo;are needed to be set up and maintained.  A business owner who buys a franchise does not so much buy a business but rather a proven set of systems.  You can do all you can to run a good business but in the end it&rsquo;s the kid , being paid minimum wage at the counter , who serves your hamburger and in the end sets the whole tone and profitability for your restaurant.  You may never get a great hamburger at a major chain restaurant but you can be assured that you should always get an adequate product with consistency.</p>
<p>          These systems in place in a restaurant system are redundant in nature.  That is they cover up for errors or mistakes.  The &ldquo;16 year old kid&rdquo; who was there yesterday may not be there today.  Someone has to fill in to maintain that assured level of quality.  It&rsquo;s almost as if the modern restaurant with its systems in place is like Henry Ford&rsquo;s old assembly line or Charlie Chaplin in the film &ldquo;Modern Times&rdquo;.   The employee has one task or a limited amount of tasks.  It&rsquo;s almost as if there are signs on the wall &ldquo;Pick up hamburger here&rdquo;, &ldquo;Put on two scoops of Mayonnaise here&rdquo; and &ldquo;Pick up hamburger here, place onions and one slice of tomato here&rdquo;.    If the employee is new , or does not really care about their job , or the quality of the product then the system takes over with its redundancy and simplicity.  If one employee does not do their job fully, well then the system generally takes care of the problems to a great extent.</p>
<p>           It&rsquo;s to everyone&rsquo;s benefit that a standard level of quality be maintained.  Systems are excellent for that.  The very basis of control systems in the food hospitality industry is that they are reliable &ndash; you can count on them.  You may never get an exceptional hamburger, food product or service, yet on the other side you never get a terrible one.<br />
<br />What you get is a standard acceptable level as a customer, and running, predictable reliable business that pays its bills, submits its taxes, completes government requirements and licenses and will carry a good profit.  The food business is just too complex and hard to manage otherwise in these days and times.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Stretch marks, we have all heard of them and most of us have a few or a lot that we carry around as battle scars. They develop when we experience several different aspects of life including pregnancy, rapid weight gain, rapid growth like seen during puberty, or from rapid muscle building (body builders). Stretch marks can vary in color from bright red to a faded out version which appears silvery white.</p>
<p>Although stretch marks appear when the skin is &#8220;stretched&#8221; the culprit behind their formation is actually the glucocorticoid hormones. It is not the stretching of the skin that causes the problem, it is the actual hormonal changes in the body that is occurring; during pregnancy, weight gain, muscle building and puberty. Our skin contains collagen and elastin fibers produced by cells called fibroblasts which function by maintaining the skins natural tone and elasticity. The glucocorticoid hormones interfere with this production causing the epidermis and the dermis layers of our skin to weaken and tear thus the scarring. </p>
<p>There has long been controversy over whether or not topical creams are effective in removing stretch marks. The answer is yes and no. The problem with searching for topical solutions is that there is so many products on the market to choose from and many are expensive. They all claim to be effective but unfortunately many do not have the  scientific proof to back this up. That being said there are some products that have been proven to drastically reduce the appearance of stretch marks. This is the important key to remember, effective topical products reduce the appearance of the stretch marks, they do not make them disappear completely.</p>
<p>A drastic and yet effective method for getting rid of stretch marks is by removing the affected portion of skin, this can either be done by laser surgery or by traditional surgery. In traditional surgery the skin is simply cut out and removed this is often done after extreme weight loss where there is excess skin available. Laser surgery is also a means to essentially remove the skin, areas of skin are removed and new skin then grows in to replace the old. The trade off for surgery is of course scarring so options definitely need to be weighed.</p>
<p>In recent years there has been the emergence of chemical peels and microdermabrasion which are used to remedy many skin concerns and issues. These techniques are now being utilized to remove stretch marks and may be an attractive option because they are generally less expensive then surgical procedures and are not invasive which means virtually no down time.</p>
<p>Stretch marks are very individual and therefore no one treatment is right for everyone. Do your homework so that you are realistic about what to expect; results often depend on the degree of scarring, the depth of the scar and the age of the scar. If stretch marks are something you can not live with then remember it is always best to consult with a dermatologist to you determine which treatments or procedures would be best for you.</p>

<p>It&rsquo;s not the latest medical invention or drug.</p>
<p>Nope, it&rsquo;s supplements.</p>
<p>According to exciting research from the Lewin Group, spending just a few cents a day on some key nutritional supplements can significantly decrease chronic illness&mdash;as well as healthcare costs.</p>
<p>Using strict criteria, the Lewin Group analyzed scientific studies on nutritional supplements, then used our government&rsquo;s own accounting techniques to determine their economic impact.</p>
<p>They looked only at Medicare recipients and women of childbearing age, and only at supplements that have been proven to help beyond any scientific doubt:</p>
<p>1. Calcium and vitamin D for osteoporosis<br />
<br />2. Folic acid for prevention of birth defects<br />
<br />3. Omega-3 fatty acids for heart disease<br />
<br />4. Lutein and zeaxanthin for prevention of major age-related blindness, or macular degeneration</p>
<p>Let&rsquo;s start with calcium and vitamin D.</p>
<p>First, the Lewin Group study used older research. Newer studies suggest that higher doses of vitamin D3 (1,000 to 2,000 IU daily), may be even more helpful.</p>
<p>But even with that older data, the researchers found that giving older people 1,200 mg of calcium and 400 IU of vitamin D a day would decrease bone loss and hip fractures. They estimated these supplements could prevent more than 776,000 hospitalizations for hip fractures over five years, saving $16.1 billion.</p>

<p>Among other benefits, omega-3 fatty acids help prevent cardiac arrhythmias, improve cell membrane function, reduce inflammation, and lower cholesterol and blood pressure.</p>
<p>According to the Lewin Group, giving about 1,800 mg of omega-3 fats a day to Medicare-age people could prevent 374,000 hospitalizations from heart disease over five years and save $3.2 billion.</p>
<p>They also estimated the economic effects of lutein and zeaxanthin, carotenoids found in yellow and orange vegetables. Taken as supplements, these have been shown to treat macular degeneration, which is the loss of central vision, a major reason people over age 65 require nursing home care.</p>
<p>They found that taking 6 to 10 mg of supplemental lutein and zeaxanthin daily would help 190,000 individuals avoid dependent care as a result of macular degeneration. The savings? $3.6 billion over five years.</p>
<p>Finally, the Lewin Group looked at folic acid. If 11.3 million women began taking just 400 mcg daily of this vitamin before getting pregnant, we could prevent birth defects in 600 babies, saving $1.4 billion over five years.</p>
<p>These four supplements could create a combined savings of $24 billion over five years.</p>
<p>Yet the typical American diet often doesn&rsquo;t contain the necessary amount of these nutrients, putting us at higher risk for the problems mentioned above.</p>
<p>In fact, the majority of us are deficient in one or more nutrients at the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) level, which is the minimum amount necessary to prevent deficiency diseases. That&rsquo;s not even the amount often needed for optimal health and to prevent conditions like blindness, osteoporosis, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and dementia.</p>
<p>That&rsquo;s why I firmly believe we should all take certain nutritional supplements. These recommendations are supported by mainstream medical journals (1, 2).</p>
<p>Here is the regimen I recommend for everyone:</p>
<p>1. A high-quality multivitamin and mineral that contains mixed carotenoids (including lutein and zeaxanthin), at least 400 mcg of folate, and a mixed B-complex vitamin</p>
<p>2. Calcium-magnesium with at least 600 mg of calcium and 400 mg of magnesium. Choose calcium citrate or chelated versions of minerals, not calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide, which are poorly absorbed</p>
<p>3. Vitamin D3, 1,000 to 2,000 IU a day (people who are deficient in vitamin D will need more)</p>
<p>4. Omega-3 fatty acids that contain the fats EPA and DHA, 1,000 to 2,000 mg a day.</p>
<p>This regimen is relatively inexpensive, risk free&mdash;and the benefits are enormous. You&rsquo;ll have better immune function, brain function, and higher energy and will also prevent many future health problems.</p>
<p>I think that&rsquo;s worth it.</p>
